Marvel Studios unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming movie Captain America: Brave New World at the inaugural D23 fan event in Brazil. The release of the fourth stand-alone Captain America film, which also features Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson wielding the shield for the first time, is highly anticipated.
Similar to the previous Captain America films, Brave New World makes full use of the spy-thriller subseries. Indeed, this may be the most espionage thriller-like experience we’ve had from a Captain America film to date.
Sam Wilson has now fully embraced the role of Captain America after the release of the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in 2021. However, Mackie’s Cap finds himself entangled in a global crisis, proving that the arm with the shield is heavy.
The trailer makes extensive use of its predecessors’ espionage roots. As Sam Wilson tries to identify the mastermind behind a sinister worldwide conspiracy involving Harrison Ford’s portrayal of U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, the trailer’s split-screen shots and flickering effects resemble something we might see in an episode of 24.
Regretfully, the major plot twist in Captain America: Brave New World—that Thaddeus Ross is the Red Hulk—was already hinted at in earlier trailers. In the end, there is a lot of action teased, even though the trailer may contain espionage elements. After all, this is a Marvel film.
On February 14, 2025, Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters. Sam Wilson has a lot of big shoes to fill as Marvel Studios’ first big theatrical release of the year and the first to follow in the footsteps of the wildly successful Deadpool & Wolverine, which broke box office records. Although the film appears to be entertaining, will it be enough to draw Marvel fans to theaters?
